Our town is in mourning…

In the last 8 months our town has lost 5 young boys to tragic accidents. Today they pulled a second body from our frozen lake. On Monday a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old decided to go ice fishing at 6:00 pm. One of the boys mom’s dropped them off at the lake and left. Sometime after 6:00 pm several people who lived close to the lake heard screaming. Someone called 911 while others went to try and save them. It was very dark and all they could hear was crying and shouting “Help Me! Please, I don’t want to die!”, and then they heard nothing. Rescuers were called in and when the mom went back to get the boys she saw a search and rescue was under way and ran screaming towards the lake realizing her son was in trouble. My daughter did not want to go to school yesterday because she was afraid to find out who it was.

In August, a 14-year-old boy was experimenting with the choking game. If you are not familiar with this Google it. It seems to be in vogue at the moment and many children have died from it. I guess this games gives you some kind of “high”. This boy was doing it alone with tragic consequences. My daughter was one of the first to find out because it was the little brother that discovered the body and he was in my daughters grade. He posted on his Facebook that his brother was dead. Rumors were flying every where…was it suicide? an accident? My daughter was upset enough to ask me to find out what really happened and if it was true. Unfortunately it was true…the poor brother went on Facebook to defend his brother, he was only 12 years old. He said his brother had broken a bone in his neck and died. I guess we still don’t really know what happened.

In June, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were texting and driving and hit a tree. They died on a Monday and would have graduated on Friday. The parents were very good friends and didn’t blame the child behind the wheel…they saw it for what it was a tragic accident. The parents of each child attended the others funeral. At the “drivers” funeral a police officer who was at the scene decided to come and speak . He told the parents of the dead “passenger” how sorry he was that the dead driver killed their boy. The drivers mom walked up in front of everyone and punched the officer in the face. She was arrested and charged with assault.

Perspective is everything…You think things are bad? Well, take a look around you. Things really can be much worse.

I am a mom of 4 who thought she was home free with her oldest son when he went off to college. My serious blunder? Genetics and being naive or maybe just plain stupid.
